Week 8 2025 CGA Power Rankings & Winter Cup Schedule:

Each week we’ll release a “Power Rankings” that aims to provide a fluid picture of how each team across the NCAA is doing at the moment and where NCAA men’s gymnastics experts see them heading. The (+) or (-) next to each team relates to how far they rose or fell from the week before. This year’s Power Rankings are developed with input from major gymnastics publications including the CGA Coaches Poll, Inside Gymnastics, and Gymnastics Now.

Week 8 did not disappoint, starting with a tri-meet at Cal (312.0) with Oklahoma (323.1) and Nebraska (317.1). Cal picked up right where they left off, nearly matching their season high. Aidan Li (13.95), the Canadian national pommel horse champion, claimed another title on his signature event. Cal’s vault squad (56.75) put up the 4th highest vault total achieved this season, sticking 3 landings, led by Carter Kim (14.25). Oklahoma dominated as a team while resting some of their star athletes. Zach Nunez (13.95) tied Li for the pommel horse title, and Tas Hajdu (14.05) took the title on rings. Nebraska held their own, but couldn’t quite keep up with Oklahoma’s consistency. Chase Mondi (14.2) topped the standings on floor, Joey Pepe (13.95) won parallel bars, and Taylor Christopulos (13.65) took the high bar title.

Illinois (316.7) hosted Greenville (309.25) and Army (307.5), claiming 5 of 6 event titles along the way. Army’s Ben Aguilar (13.85) and Greenville’s Ethan Poole (13.85) tied for the first spot on floor. Brandon Dang (14.7) continued his streak on pommel horse, while Preston Ngai (13.8, rings), Amari Sewell (14.35, vault), Matthew Ngyuen (14.05, parallel bars), and Ryan Vanichtheeranont (13.9, high bar) claimed titles on their event’s respectively.

Springfield (309.35) traveled to the Naval Academy (311.05) for an ECAC matchup in which the home team emerged victorious. Navy started the contest with an early advantage, led by Benjamin Thurlow Lam (13.95) on floor, that Springfield was never able to come back from. A strong vault rotation began a comeback for Springfield. However, the efforts of Kaleb Palacio (14.3) and Will Wilson (14.2) were not enough for a strong Navy parallel bars lineup led by freshman, Jonah Soltz (13.15). A late surge on high bar aided Springfield’s cause but ultimately Navy finished the meet on top. Palacio’s (77.7) strong performances throughout placed him first in the all-around competition.

In a stunning upset, Penn State (321.35) soared to a victory over five time defending NCAA team champion, Stanford (314.45). Inconsistency plagued Stanford throughout the contest. The Cardinal claimed four of six individual titles, but simultaneously had an athlete place last on five of six events, in some cases by a significant margin. Asher Hong remains the stalwart of Stanford as he won two event titles, rings (14.4) and parallel bars (14.05). Brandon Ngyuen (14.05) continued his streak of phenomenal parallel bars performances to join Hong on the podium. Josh Karnes was the star of day the Nittany Lions. Karnes led the way on high bar (13.6) and finished within half a tenth of the event champion on pommel horse and parallel bars.

William & Mary (310.15), still yet to compete at home, pulled off a decisive victory over conference rival, Simpson (295.15). Luke Tully (76.2) led the charge for William & Mary, taking home the all-around crown. Simpson started the meet strong - Jake Smith (13.5) won floor, and Alex Catchpole (12.7) won pommel horse. William & Mary swept Simpson on rings and high bar. Evan Wilkins topped the chart on both events (rings - 13.2, high bar - 13.1).
