Week 4 Power Rankings & Schedule

Each week we’ll be releasing a “Power Rankings” that aims to provide a fluid picture of how each team across the NCAA is doing at the moment and where we see them heading. The (+) or (-) next to each team relates to how far they rose or fell from the week before.

This year’s Power Rankings are developed with input from major gymnastics publications including the CGA, Inside Gymnastics, Gymnastics Now, College Gym News, and Gymcastic.

B1G Regular Season Kicks Off, Standings Remain Unpredictable

February 3, 2023

There is no predictability this year. Teams are utilizing the early part of the season to figure out their desired lineups, test out new routines, and gain experience. This is leading to some of the most drastic changes in the standings that we’ve ever seen on a week to week basis.

Stanford’s performance at the Stanford Open resulted in a slightly lower overall score than the Cardinal are capable of, but this is because some of the stalwarts of their lineup competed as a Team USA contingent. Khoi Young was the clear standout this past weekend as he put up an 84.00 in the All-Around to lead Stanford and keep his team at the top of the power rankings. Cal (390.1) took on the Cardinal here, and although the Bears put up a solid performance they were unable to move up in the rankings and hold onto the 9th spot yet again.

Oklahoma (405.4) had a tough home battle with the Illini (404.45) but prevailed to remain in the 2nd position behind the untouchable Stanford Cardinal. Illinois showed what they are made of as they put up their season high score so far in Norman to move up one spot to 5th in the power rankings this week. Air Force (380.45) was the other competitor in this competition, but were less fortunate than they were in their home opener last week, resulting in a two spot tumble to 10th.

Michigan’s battle with long time rival Ohio State proved successful. The Wolverines put up a 409.2 to take down the Buckeyes 404.0. This big, home performance was a huge boost, propelling Michigan up four places to 3rd in the rankings this week. Ohio State’s 404 is nothing to scoff at either. This week to week consistency scoring above the 400 mark has not been seen often this season. Consistency for the Buckeyes looks to be paying off and lands head coach Rustam Sharipov’s team in the 4th spot this week.

Nebraska (399.55) and Penn State (398.0) went head to head in State College this week in their B1G opener. A lower scoring affair than the other Big 10 teams this week led to a significant drop in the rankings for both teams. Nebraska is now in the 6th slot and Penn State ends the week hanging onto 7th.

An ECAC matchup between Navy (393.3) and William & Mary (365.1) kept the Midshipmen in the mix of the elite teams in the NCAA. Navy moves up two spots to 8th this week. William & Mary on the other hand had a rough outing resulting in a two spot drop to 14th.

Army (381.55) and Springfield (377.65) faced off on Alden Street this weekend in a close matchup. This result kept Army solidly in the 11th spot in the rankings while Springfield moved ahead of William & Mary to move into the 12th spot.

Greenville and Simpson did not compete this week, however Greenville benefitted from the rough outing from the Tribe and moved up to 13th. Simpson holds down the 15th spot.

Next week we look forward to a slew of consequential Big Ten regular season matchups as well as a couple important ECAC contests including the much anticipated Army vs. Navy duel.
