Week 5 Power Rankings & Schedule

Each week we’ll be releasing a “Power Rankings” that aims to provide a fluid picture of how each team across the NCAA is doing at the moment and where we see them heading. The (+) or (-) next to each team relates to how far they rose or fell from the week before.

This year’s Power Rankings are developed utilizing the NCAA coaches poll as well as input from major gymnastics publications including the CGA, Inside Gymnastics, Gymnastics Now, College Gym News, and Gymcastic.

Illinois and Michigan Impress, Oklahoma Shows Consistency

Big Ten competition continued this past week. Penn State’s early season success seems to have cooled off and Illinois has taken off. The Nittany Lions traveled to Champaign and put up a solid (401.75), but it wasn’t enough to register a win over the fighting Illini (408.8). Ian Skirky put up a 14.9 on pommel horse, the highest score on that event this season.

In another Big Ten competition Michigan (407.4) narrowly took down the Huskers (406.25) in Lincoln. Both teams put up very solid performances and seem to be right where they need to be at this point in the season - the potential is showing through while there is still some room for improvement.

Navy and Army dueled in another star series contest. This year the midshipmen (394.05) barely evaded the knights (393.15). This was another predictable score for Navy while Army pulled off a season high.

Oklahoma welcomed Simpson in a lopsided contest. The Sooners (407.65) had a solid outing highlighted by a huge vault (15.05) from Daniel Simmons. Simpson (352.55) is coming into its own and put up a season high by 11 points.

Springfield put on a show this week. The Pride scored (390.8), their highest score since 2018 while hitting 29 of 30 routines. This could make the Pride a really dangerous team in the ECAC. William & Mary (378.6) had a decent outing, which was not enough to take down Springfield, but is a season high score for the Tribe.

This coming weekend we can look forward to a slew of Big Ten regular season contests and an early season marquee matchup as #1 Stanford heads to Norman to face off with #2 Oklahoma.
