Week 11 Power Rankings & Schedule

Each week we’ll be releasing a “Power Rankings” that aims to provide a fluid picture of how each team across the NCAA is doing on a week-to-week basis and where we see them heading. The (+) or (-) next to each team relates to how far they rose or fell from the week before. 

This year’s Power Rankings are developed utilizing the NCAA coaches’ poll as well as input from major gymnastics publications including, Inside Gymnastics, Gymnastics Now, and Neutral Deductions.

In week 11 the two highest team scoring performances of the season were on display. Stanford led off on Saturday boasting a (421.15) to top Oklahoma (410.5) and Cal (404.95). However, the Cardinal held the title of highest scoring team for less than a day. Michigan outpaced Penn State on Sunday afternoon posting a (425.5) to take down the Nittany Lions (413.6) in Ann Arbor.

In the west coast tri-meet, Asher Hong was the star of the show winning three of seven individual titles including the all-around (86.05), rings (15.0), and vault (15.2). Other big performances from the competition were Oklahoma’s Emre Dodanli’s floor (15.0) and Ignacio Yockers’ pommel horse (14.8). Cal’s Darren Wong took second on high bar (13.8) to Stanford’s Jeremy Bischoff (13.9). Khoi Young won parallel bars (14.95).

In the other high score record setting contest of the weekend, Michigan’s Fred Richard put on a show. Richard took home the all-around (86.95), floor (14.6), and high bar (15.3) titles while teammates Landen Blixt and Evgeny Siminiuc won vault (14.7) and parallel bars (14.6) respectively. Penn State’s Michael Jaroh claimed the pommel horse title (14.7) and Luke Esparo was the rings champion (14.45) in the consequential Big Ten regular season contest.

In ECAC action, Springfield defended their home gym, defeating Army (398.55) to (389.25). The Pride’s Sam Kaplan topped the 80 mark to win the all-around title (80.45) over Army’s Nick Lester (75.1). Kaplan also claimed the parallel bars title (13.55). Army’s Steve Manolakis had a strong day, tying for the floor title (13.5) with Springfield’s Evan Reichert and Tim Templeton, finishing second on vault (14.2) to the Pride’s Dominic Ramalho (14.3). Other big performances were Peyton Cramer’s (14.45) on pommel horse and Zachary Perez on high bar (13.6).

Taking the action to Colorado over the weekend was Simpson who fought valiantly but ultimately lost to Air Force (347.3) to (395.95). Oliver Zavel was crowned all-around champion (79.7) and snagged two more titles on rings (13.7) and parallel bars (14.3). Erich Upton’s day included two more titles for Air Force – one on vault (14.8) and the other on high bar (13.1). Garret Braunton and Patrick Hoopes swooped up the floor (14.3) and pommel horse titles (14.45).  

Back on the east coast, Navy (396.75) overcame a strong effort by William & Mary (388.1) to add another win to their tally this year. The Tribe’s Aidan Cuy took home the all-around (77.0) while Navy gymnasts cleaned up the individual event titles. Brian Solomon won his first ever title on floor (13.8), and Mathew Petros claimed vault (14.6), parallel bars (14.0), and high bar (13.4).

In other Big Ten regular season action Illinois (413.2) took down Ohio State (406.35). Parker Thackston was one of two individual event title winners for the Buckeyes with a (14.7) on pommel horse. His teammate Donovan Hewitt tied Ashton Anaya on rings (14.2). Tate Costa scored a career high in the all-around (81.75) to top the podium. Costa also with the floor (14.4) and parallel bars (14.1) champion. Amari Sewell and Ryan Vanichtheeranont stole the show on vault (14.85) and high bar (14.1) respectively.
