Week 2 Power Rankings & Schedule

Penn State sets the standard for the B1G, Illinois upsets Michigan, Stanford validates pre-season ranking

January 19, 2023

Week two provided upsets, debuts, highs, and lows. Penn State (407.6) has come out of the gates in a ferocious way this year. Yet again the Nittany Lions move up in the rankings this week to 2nd; 3 places above their preseason ranking. Head Coach Randy Jepson has Junior Captain and gymnast of the week, Matt Cormier to thank for this early season success.

Stanford set the stage in their first outing with a 410.5. This score is big, but if you take a look at the lineup you’ll see that Stanford was without Brody Malone, Colt Walker, Ian Gunther, and Khoi Young this week - all of whom will provide even more fire power to this already stacked team. Riley Loos, Asher Hong, Taylor Burkhardt, and Jeremy Bischoff showed that they are prepared to do big things this season.

The Windy City Invitational provided a big first win for Illinois (399.4) head coach Daniel Ribeiro as the Illini upset Michigan (396.05). Both teams had big performances from key athletes. All-Americans Connor McCool (14.3, Illinois) and Adam Wooten (14.1, Michigan), who are current captains for their respective teams, took event titles on floor and high bar.

William & Mary (360.75) and Simpson (318.25)  had a virtual battle over the weekend as well. Both teams are shaking off early cob webs as they get into the swing of things this season.

Some notable performances this weekend were on the Pommel Horse. Army’s Maddox Pabellon (14.35), and Cal’s Noah Sano (13.95) and Will Lavanakul (13.9) put up huge performances to hold the top 3 spots in the Road to Nationals pommel horse rankings.

This year’s Power Rankings are developed with input from major gymnastics publications including the CGA, Inside Gymnastics, Gymnastics Now, College Gym News, and Gymcastic.
