Week 11 Power Rankings & Schedule

The Top Five Distance Themselves From the Rest

Every week we’ll be releasing a “Power Rankings” that aims to provide a fluid picture of how each team across the NCAA is doing at the moment and where we see them heading. The (+) or (-) next to each team relates to how far they rose or fell from the week before.

This year’s Power Rankings are the top teams in each association based on the average individual rankings of three individuals:

Bailey Perez (former Stanford gymnast)

Ben Cooperman (former Penn State gymnast)

Max Soifer (former Washington gymnast)

NCAA

1. Stanford (-)

For the first time this season, Stanford didn’t put up the highest score of the week.  Their 411.30 fell short of Michigan’s 411.85.  However, things might not seem so grim for the Cardinal as they were resting several key competitors including Brody Malone, Riley Loos, and Ian Lasic-Ellis.  With the regular season over for the Cardinal, they will be heading into the postseason as the team to beat.  They will be looking to capture the MPSF Championship and lock down their third National Championship in a row.

2. Michigan (-)

A weekend high score of 411.85 to take down big ten rival Illinois was enough to keep Michigan ahead of Oklahoma in the second spot. The return of Cameron Bock seems to have had a big impact on Michigan’s scoring potential, even while he is only showing a couple of events at this point in the season. Paul Juda is also hitting his stride at just the right time. His all-around score of 85.00 puts him in the elite class of NCAA all-arounders and sets both him and his team up well for success. The Wolverines will host Penn State next weekend in their final Big Ten regular season matchup. If Michigan comes out on top, they will put themselves in a good spot to take home the regular season Big Ten title.

3. Oklahoma (-)

After their lowest score of the season a week ago, Oklahoma bounced right back with a 408.40 to take care of Ohio State with ease.  The 2022 OU team carries with it the poise typical of a Mark Williams’ coached team, consistently hitting sets and putting up big numbers regardless of who is in the lineup.  The Sooners will have one more competition this weekend when they host Cal before postseason kicks off.  It will be interesting to see if they compete their best lineups as they prepare for the meets that count the most.

4. Nebraska (-)

Nebraska put up a season-high 410.50 this past weekend against Air Force and Army.  Although their exciting performance was the third highest of the week behind Michigan and Stanford, they remain at number four in a very tight race for number three with the Sooners.  They face off against Ohio State this weekend for their last competition of the regular season before heading into the postseason where they will be looking to battle it out with the B1G’s top teams.

5. Illinois (-)

Illinois put on a show for the second week in a row, but still hold on to the fifth spot behind a talented Husker squad. Hamish Carter had a phenomenal day. Continued performances from him and the rest of his team will put the Illini in contention for the Big Ten title come championship season. Nebraska should be weary of this Big Ten foe, especially since Illinois was not perfect over the past two weekends and has room to improve. This weekend the Illini will travel to Colorado to take on the Naval Academy, Air Force, and the Rocky Mountain Pride in their last regular season contest.

This weekend: Illinois, Navy, Rocky Mountain @ Air Force Saturday, March 19 at 3pm

6. Ohio State (-)

Aside from upsetting Michigan earlier in the season, Ohio State has not done much to show they are a top five team.  As a result, they have found sixth in the power rankings to be their ceiling.  They were able to beat Penn State head-to-head, allowing some separation from the number seven spot; though their track record is similar to that of the Nittany Lions, only a single score above the 400 mark all season.

 7. Penn State (+1)

The Nittany Lions showcased a 395.30 this past weekend at Springfield, helping them jump to number seven in the rankings.  Although they are showing some late season improvements, they still sit several points behind Ohio State who took them down head-to-head.  Penn State heads to Michigan this weekend for their last big matchup before heading into Championship season.

8. Cal (-1)

A rough outing on senior night for Cal puts them down one spot in the rankings behind Penn State. If Cal can reproduce their big 401.15 from a few weeks ago, they will be able to stand a chance against some of the top players in the NCAA. However, continued sub 390 days will not be the path for Cal to make the waves that this well coached team is capable of making come postseason. The Bears are done for the regular season and now have a couple of weeks off before they travel across the bay to take on Air Force and Oklahoma at Stanford for the MPSF championships.

9. Navy (-)

After facing Penn State earlier in the season, Navy has not been put to the test through the bulk of their mid season schedule.  Finally, they will wrap the 2022 regular season with a contest against Illinois along with Air Force and Rocky Mountain.  It will be a tall task for the Midshipmen to take down the Illini, but it will tell us where they land against a top team.

This weekend: Illinois, Navy, Rocky Mountain @ Air Force Saturday, March 19 at 3pm

How to watch:

10. Army (-)

Army remains in the number ten spot after their 387.50 performance against Nebraska and Air Force this past weekend.  The Black Knights actually fell several points short of number eleven ranked Air Force, but the Falcons’ history from the rest of the season helped Army retain their ranking.  This weekend, they will be facing off against Springfield where they will be looking to make a final push before heading into the USAG Nationals on March 25th.

This weekend: Springfield @ Army Saturday, March 19 at 1pm

How to watch:

11. Air Force (-)

Air Force holds in eleventh place after a 20 point season high performance. Garrett Braunton had a big day going 80+ in the all-around and the rest of the team rallied behind him to produce a score that we have all known the Falcons were capable of all season. If Air Force can continue to put on shows like the one this past weekend, then they will challenge for a spot in the super six come NCAA championships. The Falcons will take on Illinois, Navy, and Rocky Mountain at home this coming weekend in their final regular season outing.

This weekend: Illinois, Navy, Rocky Mountain @ Air Force Saturday, March 19 at 3pm

How to watch:

12. Springfield (+1)

After breaking 380 earlier in the season, Springfield fell a bit but has recently been surging back.  Even last week with a poor pommel horse rotation at Penn State, they were able to go 378.70.  One more contest remains against Army this weekend to get back above the 380 mark before ECAC Championships.

This weekend: Springfield @ Army Saturday, March 19 at 1pm

How to watch:

13. William & Mary (-1)

A shaky first half of the season left William & Mary behind the pack.  Since they broke 380 in the middle of the year, they have been consistently close to that figure.  Their number 13 ranking is not entirely indicative of what they are capable of;  the Tribe can certainly surprise come postseason.

GymACT
1. Arizona (-)

AMG holds their ranking at number one after having the week off.  Arizona will hit the competition floor in two weeks at the USAG Nationals where they will be a top contender for the title.

2. Iowa (-)

Iowa continues to impress in their first season as a GymACT team. A win against Washington in Seattle keeps this small but strong Hawkeye team in second place in the GymACT standings. Evan Davis, James Friedman, Carter Tope, and Amari Sewell all have made their way back into multiple events after years of specializing and are putting up big gymnastics. When Iowa puts it all together, they are capable of keeping up with some of the strongest teams in the NCAA. With the regular season over they will look to take down AMG in the GymACT regular season bracket before preparing for USAG championships and GymACT Nationals.

3. Washington (-)

It has been a fairly quiet, yet successful season for the Huskies.  They have not fallen below the 360 mark a single time and capped off their regular season with a 370.15 against Iowa last weekend.  Washington will have USAG Nationals up next, looking to overtake one of Iowa or Arizona.

4. Minnesota (-)

Minnesota had last week off and remain at number four in the rankings.  They will return to competition on March 25th for USAG Nationals.

5. Temple (-)

Temple has been off for some time but will return to competition this weekend to face Georgia United.

7. SC United (-)

It’s been a terrific season for SC United and they will look to keep it up in just over a week at USAG Nationals.

8. Rocky Mountain (-)

Rocky Mountain will return to competition March 19th.

This weekend: Illinois, Navy, Rocky Mountain @ Air Force Saturday, March 19 at 3pm

UIC will return to the competition floor on March 25th for USAG Nationals.

10. NY Alliance (-)

NYA will return to action on March 25th for USAG Nationals.

11. Georgia United (-)

A week off for Georgia United keeps the team in 11th place in the GymACT rankings. GU will take on Temple in a virtual dual this coming Sunday to see if they can bump up a few spots before the end of the regular season.
