Week 8 Power Rankings & Schedule
Cal Jumps Two Spots, Springfield Pushes Ahead of Air Force
Every week we’ll be releasing a “Power Rankings” that aims to provide a fluid picture of how each team across the NCAA is doing at the moment and where we see them heading. The (+) or (-) next to each team relates to how far they rose or fell from the week before.
This year’s Power Rankings are the top teams in each association based on the average individual rankings of three individuals:
Bailey Perez (former Stanford gymnast)
Ben Cooperman (former Penn State gymnast)
Max Soifer (former Washington gymnast)
NCAA
1. Stanford (-)
The Cardinal had the weekend off, but their dominating season performance holds them at the top of the NCAA. However, number two ranked Oklahoma put on a show with their 414.20, possibly suggesting that the Cardinal aren’t as far out of reach as many might think. Stanford is sending an abundance of guys to Winter Cup this weekend where they will be looking to secure multiple spots on the Senior National Team. They will next hit the collegiate competition floor on March 5th when they take on Air Force and Cal at home.
2. Oklahoma (-)
A big showing at home against Nebraska solidifies Oklahoma’s position in second ahead of Michigan. While this huge performance supersedes what nearly every other team in the NCAA seems to be capable of this season, it still lags behind that of Stanford. Most of Oklahoma’s team will be off this coming week as their top athletes vie for a coveted spot on the National Team at Winter Cup this weekend. The Sooners will be in action as a team next on March 6th where they’ll take on the ECAC duo of Springfield College and William & Mary in Springfield, Massachusetts.
3. Michigan (-)
The Wolverines will not be back in action as a team until March 5th; hopefully enough time to get Cameron Bock back in the lineups. Should Bock not be back to 80+% come postseason, the Big Ten could be wide open. This week, the trio of Paul Juda, David Willett, and Crew Bold will head to Texas for Winter Cup.
4. Nebraska (-)
Nebraska’s 403.30 performance against Oklahoma this past weekend was enough to hold them at the number four spot, however, they are a few points short of making a move on Michigan. The Huskers' talented team is chomping at the bit to prove themselves, but a lack of execution is holding them back. With a bye week due to Winter Cup, the guys back in Lincoln will be grinding to make necessary fixes to their routines before hitting the floor again on March 5th for their big match up against Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota.
5. Illinois (-)
A week off for the Illini held them in the fifth spot in this week’s rankings. A mediocre performance out of the Buckeyes wasn’t enough to push Illinois down to sixth. Illinois will have a shot at defending their standing in a big matchup on March 5th against Big Ten foe Nebraska with GymACT newcomers and former Big Ten teams Iowa and Minnesota.
6. Ohio State (-)
Do not be surprised if Ohio State picks up some more impressive wins in the back half of the season. When Jesse Tyndall and Justin Ah Chow are competing at full strength, this team can take on anyone in the Big Ten, as they proved when they took down Michigan just a couple weeks ago. After Winter Cup, the Buckeyes will head to University Park for a matchup against Penn State.
7. Cal (+2)
A record setting day for Cal helped them break the 400+ mark for the first time this season. Their 401.15 jumps them two spots in the rankings, overtaking both Penn State and Navy. This stir up in the rankings is the energy that the Golden Bears might need in their quest to breach the top six. They will be looking to carry this momentum into their competition on March 5th when they face off against Stanford and Air Force.
8. Penn State (-1)
Continued struggles from the Nittany Lions paired with a week off and a stellar showing from Cal resulted in Penn State dropping to the 8th spot in the standings this week. With another week off, Penn State will have more time to clean up before they take on Ohio State at home on March 5th to salvage their regular season and attempt to move out of the last spot in the Big Ten.
9. Navy (-1)
With Cal’s big performance and a lackluster showing of their own, Navy drops down a spot in the rankings. On the road at Springfield, Kip Simons rested some of their top routines and the showing is not indicative of what is to come. The battle between Cal, Navy, and the Big Ten will be one to watch in April.
10. Army (-)
Army put on a sub-par performance this past weekend against W&M and Ohio State, but they hold their spot at number ten in the rankings. Hopefully this was an uncharacteristic performance for the Golden Knights, or else, a hungry Springfield College will be looking to pass them up in the coming weeks. They will be looking to redeem themselves on March 5th and hit closer to the 390 mark when they face off against Michigan and W&M at home.
11. Springfield (+1)
A close contest with Navy resulted in Springfield College moving up in the standings to the 11th spot this week. While Springfield put on a big show and nearly upset the Naval Academy this past weekend, Springfield moving up may have had more to do with Air Force’s woes. This talented and young team will have a chance to show their strength when Oklahoma and William & Mary visit them on March 6th.

12. Air Force (-1)
At Cal this past weekend, Air Force scored their second highest mark of the season but was not competitive with their host. The Falcons continue to count outlier scores that are greatly hurting their potential. They will compete on the west coast once again after Winter Cup with a shot at a clean scorecard.
13. William & Mary (-)
After their third score of 360+ this past weekend in Ohio, William & Mary will host Springfield College this coming Friday. They will need to be in their top form if they want to have a shot at taking down the Pride.

4. Minnesota (-)
Solidly in the number four spot, Minnesota’s ranking remains unchanged after another bye. The Gophers will have some more time to rest, clean up, and improve their scoring potential as they gear up for a big GymACT matchup with Iowa in the familiar territory of a Big Ten matchup between Nebraska and Illinois on March 5th.
5. Temple (-)
Temple continues to look great after a second straight score above the 350 mark. They will now have some time to rest until they return on March 19th.
6. Northern Illinois (-)
Northern Illinois had the week off and will hit the floor again on March 5th against number seven ranked UIC.
7. UIC (-)
