Week 7 Power Rankings & Schedule

Power Rankings Cover Photo.png

Every week we’ll be releasing a “Power Rankings” that aims to provide a fluid picture of how each team across the NCAA is doing at the moment and where we see them heading. The (+) or (-) next to each team relates to how far they rose or fell from the week before.

This year’s Power Rankings are the top 18 teams in the country based on the average individual rankings of four individuals:

Bailey Perez (former Stanford gymnast)

Ben Cooperman (former Penn State gymnast)

Max Soifer (former Washington gymnast)

1. Michigan (-)

This weekend: Iowa @ Michigan Sunday, March 7 at 1:00PMEST

How to watch: BTN+

The Michigan Wolverines hold the number one spot for another week in a row.  Cameron Bock and Paul Juda represented the Wolverines at Winter Cup this past weekend.  Bock had an impressive 84.15 performance that won him the competition.  Michigan takes on Iowa this weekend, and will be looking to have a strong performance to retain their ranking at the top of the NCAA.

2. OU (-)

This weekend: Oklahoma @ William & Mary Saturday, March 6 at TBD

How to watch:

OU holds steady in the number two slot this week after a couple of weeks off. Current Sooners, Vitaly Guimaraes and Matt Wenske, competed at Winter Cup this past weekend where Guimaraes secured a spot on the US Senior National team. OU will try to regain their spot atop the standings this weekend when they face William and Mary on Saturday, March 6th.

3. Stanford (-)

This weekend: Springfield College, Stanford (Virtual) Friday, March 5 at 2:00PMEST

How to watch: Virtius

Riley Loos, one of Stanford’s many transcendent talents, placed second at Winter Cup this past weekend, earning him a spot on the US National Team.  Loos will now be joined by Brody Malone, Brandon Briones, Ian Gunther, and Colt Walker for the remainder of the season.  Do not be surprised if Stanford’s suboptimal pandemic training conditions become a non factor and the most loaded team in the country finishes the season in top form.

4. Ohio State (-)

This weekend: Ohio State @ Nebraska Saturday, March 6 at 5:00PMEST

How to watch: BTN+

Ohio State remains in the number four spot after having the week off.  However, their ranking will be tested this weekend as they face off against the number six ranked Huskers. This B1G battle should be a close one, and Ohio State is going to need to have a strong performance if they want to take the title of this competition.

5. Illinois (-)

Like many top teams this week, Illinois had the week off and maintained a top five position in the power rankings. Junior, Michael Fletcher, competed at the Winter Cup Challenge this past weekend where he took 2nd on vault. The Illini have a significant break in their schedule and will return to action on Monday, March 22nd at Minnesota.

6. Nebraska (-)

This weekend: Ohio State @ Nebraska Saturday, March 6 at 5:00PMEST

How to watch: BTN+

Nebraska did not compete this past weekend and did not send any representatives to Winter Cup.  They face a tough test this weekend against Ohio State.

7. Penn State (-)

This weekend: Penn State @ Minnesota Saturday, March 6 at 1:00PMEST

How to watch: BTN+

Penn State remains in the number seven spot after their 403.70 performance against Navy this past weekend.  They haven’t pushed above the low 400s since early February and this is holding them down in the rankings.  The Nittany Lions will look to improve their team score this Saturday when they take on Minnesota.

8. Iowa (-)

This weekend: Iowa @ Michigan Sunday, March 7 at 1:00PMEST

How to watch: BTN+

Iowa keeps their number eight spot in the power rankings this week after a week off. The Hawkeyes look to continue their dominance when they face off against Michigan on Sunday in a battle between two undefeated Big Ten teams. The only other undefeated Big Ten team is Ohio State.

9. Navy (+1)

This weekend: Navy @ Army Saturday, March 6 at 1:00PMEST

How to watch:

Navy proved a challenge for Penn State this past weekend en route to a season high 398.60.  Even better, Isaiah Drake took 10th in the all-around at Winter Cup and landed on the national team.  Drake is slated to join the Midshipmen roster next year, a huge addition for this team.

10. Minnesota (-1)

This weekend: Penn State @ Minnesota Saturday, March 6 at 1:00PMEST

How to watch: BTN+

After a strong performance by Navy this past weekend, Minnesota drops to the number 10 spot.  If Minnesota is able to start breaking 400, we could see them begin to climb back up in the rankings.  The Gophers will look to put up their highest score of the season this weekend when they take on Penn State.

11. Cal (-)

Cal maintains their 11th place position in the power rankings after a close contest with William & Mary. The Golden Bears have some work to do on rings and vault if they want to make a case for themselves as an upper echelon team in the rankings this year. Freshman, Noah Newfeld, continues to carry this Cal team. Coach JT Okada will almost certainly lean on Newfeld on Monday, March 8th when Cal takes on their Bay Area rival, Stanford.

12. W&M (-)

This weekend: Oklahoma @ William & Mary Saturday, March 6 at TBD

How to watch:

The Tribe put up their second score of the season above the 380 mark this past weekend in a virtual matchup against Springfield.  They will host William & Mary this Saturday in their first live meet of the season.

13. Arizona State (+1)

Arizona State climbs one spot in the rankings after their strongest performance of the season where they scored a 389.30.  The Sun Devils continue to show improvement each week and will be looking to continue upon this as they head into the USAG Collegiate Nationals at the end of March.

14. Air Force (-1)

Air Force drops one place in the rankings to 14th this week after a week off. Freshman, Garrett Braunton, did not have the week off however, as he competed at the Winter Cup Challenge. The drop in the rankings this week for Air Force is mostly ASU’s doing. While Air Force had a week off, ASU had a solid showing. It didn’t help that at Winter Cup, Braunton had a rough day and ASU’s Kiwan Watts put on a solid show. Air Force will look to take back their position in the 13th slot on Saturday, March 13th in a tri-meet with Cal and Stanford in Palo Alto.

15. Army (-)

This weekend: Navy @ Army Saturday, March 6 at 1:00PMEST

How to watch:

The Black Knights had week 7 off after a string of competitions to start off the season.  They will host Navy this weekend, a matchup that always entertains.

16. Springfield (-)

This weekend: Springfield College, Stanford (Virtual) Friday, March 5 at 2:00PMEST

How to watch: Virtius

Springfield holds their number 16 spot after their 370.10 performance against W&M.  They will look to improve on this score this Friday as they take on Stanford in a virtual competition.

17. Washington (-)

Without a 2021 debut, the Huskies have managed to hold on to their 17th place ranking this season. We will see Washington in action for the first time on Monday, March 15th in a home matchup against ASU.

18. UIC (-)

UIC did not compete this past weekend and maintain their number 18 ranking.
