Week 9 Power Rankings & Schedule

Power Rankings Cover Photo.png

Every week we’ll be releasing a “Power Rankings” that aims to provide a fluid picture of how each team across the NCAA is doing at the moment and where we see them heading. The (+) or (-) next to each team relates to how far they rose or fell from the week before.

This year’s Power Rankings are the top 18 teams in the country based on the average individual rankings of four individuals:

Bailey Perez (former Stanford gymnast)

Ben Cooperman (former Penn State gymnast)

Jess Frankl (photographer/CGA Social Media Director)

Max Soifer (former Washington gymnast)

1. Michigan (+1)

Jacob Moore competed all-around for the first team this season in Michigan’s win over Minnesota, scoring an 81.90 and solidifying his place as the third star behind Paul Juda and Cameron Bock.  The Wolverines are legitimate NCAA title contenders with this trio on their roster and the Big Ten Tournament is theirs to take.

2. Stanford (-1)

After tying the Sooners with a 409.30, the Cardinal fall to 2nd in the rankings.  On paper, Stanford seems to have more talent than any other team in the NCAA, but a lack of execution during competition is holding them back from their true potential.  Execution is part of the game and if they can’t do so, it will be no walk in the park trying to defend their 2019 national title.  Stanford faces off against Cal on March 26th and will be looking to put up a big score before heading into the postseason.

3. OU (-)

A tie with Stanford at home was not enough for the Sooners to move up in the standings this week. Mark Williams’ Sooners maintain their rank of third in the CGA power rankings. Spencer Goodell did all he could to keep his team from losing to Stanford, but clearly OU will need Vitaly Guimaraes back in the lineup in order to overtake the reigning NCAA champion, Cardinal. Oklahoma heads to Cal this weekend for their final regular season contest on Saturday, March 20th.

4. Nebraska (-)

After a week off, Nebraska will travel to Iowa to take on the Hawkeyes.  They have already proven they are a top team in the Big Ten but will need a decisive victory above the 410 mark to prove they are in striking distance of Michigan.

5. Ohio State (-)

Ohio State holds their number five spot after a successful 406.10 performance against Iowa last weekend. The Buckeyes have been consistently scoring around the 405 mark and will be looking to improve upon this in their competitions against B1G rival Michigan (March 17th), and William & Mary (March 21st).

 6. Illinois (-)

Another week off for Illinois did no harm to their sixth place standing in the power rankings. The Illini will head to Minnesota on Monday, March 22nd for their final regular season matchup and their last chance to move up in the rankings before postseason.

7. Iowa (-)

After completing a couple of early season upsets, Iowa has slowed down a bit as Ohio State handled them easily this past weekend.  They have a chance to pick the pace back up as they host Nebraska in their final home competition as an NCAA team this Saturday.

8. Penn State (+1)

Penn State did not have a competition this past weekend but improved in the rankings after a disappointing performance from Minnesota.  The Nittany Lions will look to show a strong performance at home this weekend in their matchup against the number one ranked Michigan Wolverines.

 9. Minnesota (-1)

A difficult day in Michigan drops Minnesota to ninth in the rankings. As we’ve seen throughout the season, the Gophers need Shane Wiskus in order to have a shot. Hopefully for Minnesota, his return will prove fruitful as postseason rolls around. Mike Burns’ Gophers will face off against Illinois at home on Monday, March 22nd before taking on the rest of the conference at Big Ten Championships in April.

10. Navy (-)

Navy has run into some COVID-19 related issues that have put their season on pause.  They hold steady in the rankings as they patiently await their return to competition.

 11. Cal (-)

Cal had their strongest performance of the season this past weekend, posting a 389.70.  They hold the number 11 spot, and will need to push the mid to high 390s if they want to see improvement in the rankings.  They will have the opportunity to do this when they face off against Oklahoma at home this Saturday.

12. W&M (-)

William & Mary holds onto their 12th spot in the rankings this week after a week off. The Tribe will take on Ohio State on Sunday, March 21st. This contest will be their last chance to shake up the standings, but their relatively strong hold on 12th gives Mike Powell’s team a strong chance of qualifying to NCAA Championships as a team for the first time since 2014.

13. Arizona State (-)

The Sun Devils have had a quite a long stretch without competing and have not had the chance to move themselves up the board.  The hope is that some competitions are added before the season concludes.

14. Air Force (-)

Air Force remains in the number 14 spot after their 380.55 performance against Cal this past weekend.  The Falcons have shown glimpses of greatness during some routines, and the opposite on others which has been hurting their team score.  They face off against their academy rival Army in a virtual competition this Friday.
