Week 5 Power Rankings & Schedule

Michigan Jumps Back to Number Two in the NCAA, NY Alliance Moves Up Three Spots in the GymACT

Every week we’ll be releasing a “Power Rankings” that aims to provide a fluid picture of how each team across the NCAA is doing at the moment and where we see them heading. The (+) or (-) next to each team relates to how far they rose or fell from the week before.

This year’s Power Rankings are the top teams in each association based on the average individual rankings of three individuals:

Bailey Perez (former Stanford gymnast)

Ben Cooperman (former Penn State gymnast)

Max Soifer (former Washington gymnast)

NCAA

1. Stanford (-)

If week four told us anything, it’s that Stanford is likely untouchable.  Khoi Young, CGA Gymnast and Rookie of the Week, posted an outstanding 83.35 in the all-around.  His scores did not even count towards the Cardinal’s NCAA high 410.25 as Thom Glielmi competed Young, along with four others, outside of the lineup as a separate team.  This could very well be one of the best teams the NCAA has ever seen come Championship season when their five best compete on each event.

This weekend: ASU, Cal, Stanford @ Washington (Pac-12 Invitational) Friday, Feb 4 at 10pm

How to watch: TBD

2. Michigan (+1)

The Wolverines had an impressive 409.10 performance this past weekend, surging them past OU for the number two ranking.  Not to mention, they have not even tapped into the potential of  Cameron Bock yet.  Michigan’s next competition will be against Ohio State on the road where they will be looking to break into the 410+ mark.

3. Oklahoma (-1)

Oklahoma drops one spot in the standings this week to number three with a team score of 405.45. This drop in the rankings is only due to the fact that Michigan had a stellar home performance against Nebraska over the weekend to solidify their spot ahead of OU. Senior superstar, Vitaly Guimaraes, is still out and recovering from a broken nose. Once the Sooners are able to put up their full lineups, we can expect a thrilling battle for the second spot behind Stanford. Oklahoma has a week off next week before they head to Illinois for a contest against the Fighting Illini on Saturday, February 12th.

4. Nebraska (-)

With a strong showing on the road in Ann Arbor, Nebraska demonstrated that they are firmly the second best team in the Big Ten at this point in the season.  Through the early part of 2022, they are ranked no lower than number five on any single event as a team.  Outlier weaknesses, typically on rings, has held back the Cornhuskers in their resurgence over the past five years.  It’s a small sample size, but early indicators show that this is a very well rounded team.

This weekend: Penn State @ Nebraska Saturday, Feb 5 at 7:30pm

5. Ohio State (-)

Ohio State rested this weekend helping them retain their spot at number five in the rankings.  However, it is pivotal that the Buckeyes took advantage of this week off as they have a big upcoming competition against number six ranked Illinois this weekend.

This weekend: Ohio State @ Illinois Saturday, Feb 5 at 5pm

How to watch: BTN+

6. Illinois (-)

A close contest against Penn State held the Illini in the sixth spot this week. A much improved 397.25 bodes well for Illinois as the season progresses. Like many teams, Illinois is still figuring out their best lineups and making sure that their best guys will be healthy and experienced enough come postseason. The next couple of weekends will provide a good look into what this Illinois team is made of this year as they will stay home next week and the week after to take on Ohio State and then Oklahoma.

This weekend: Ohio State @ Illinois Saturday, Feb 5 at 5pm

How to watch: BTN+

7. Penn State (-)

The loss to Illinois this past weekend certainly stings for Penn State, but looked at holistically, it’s a big step for this young team.  A season high 396.55 and the resurgence of Michael Jaroh are certainly positives Randy Jepson can take away from the meet.  The Nittany Lions will have to see some consistency from their other younger roster members if they want to break down the 400 barrier.

This weekend: Penn State @ Nebraska Saturday, Feb 5 at 7:30pm

8. Navy (-)

Navy’s 390.25 was enough to help them retain their number eight ranking this week, however, they are still several points away from being able to advance their standing.  Luckily, they have an opportunity to change this as they face off against their rival, Army, this Saturday.

This weekend: Army @ Navy Saturday, Feb 5 at 1pm

How to watch: TBD

9. Cal (-)

The Stanford Open was a good showing for the Bears as they put up a 393.00 to remain in the ninth spot. Continued performances of this caliber will help Cal push their way ahead of Navy in the power rankings. Cal will head up to Seattle for the Pac-12 Invitational this coming weekend to take on Stanford, ASU, and Washington.

This weekend: ASU, Cal, Stanford @ Washington (Pac-12 Invitational) Friday, Feb 4 at 10pm

How to watch: TBD

10. Army (-)

Even while resting Mathew Davis, Army was able to stay above the 380 mark in week four.  They also found more depth in their roster and allowed some younger members to gain some experience.  This will bode well for them as they head deeper into the season and the workload piles up.

This weekend: Army @ Navy Saturday, Feb 5 at 1pm

How to watch: TBD

11. Springfield (-)

Springfield had the opportunity to overtake Army in the rankings this past weekend, but their 378.90 left them short of doing so.  They will be looking to refine their routines for the next few weeks before competing against Navy on February 20th.

12. Air Force (+1)

A week off proved to be helpful for the Falcons as William & Mary’s struggles dropped the Tribe in the standings which resulted in Air Force moving up to the 12th spot. USAFA will next be in action at the All-Academy Championships on February 12th against Navy and Army.

13. William & Mary (-1)

The Tribe had some difficulties this past weekend, tallying their lowest total of the year and dropping one spot in the rankings.  Fortunately, the mistakes that were made can be fixed.  William & Mary has a couple of weeks off to refine their routines and eliminate some of their outlier scores.

GymACT

1. Iowa (-)

Iowa has some very strong carryover from their NCAA roster a season ago, making a lot of noise in their first season as GymACT competitors.  Evan Davis, James Friedman, and Amari Sewell all stepped up and added big contributions in their team’s high score of 382.65 this past Saturday.  The Hawkeyes have, however, struggled a bit on floor.  This is one of the easier events to make quick improvements; it would not be surprising to see a big score jump once changes are made here.

2. Arizona State (-)

ASU’s 360.40 helped them win this weekend against KC United and Rocky Mountain, but it was not enough to surpass Iowa in the rankings who closed out over 25 points higher in their competition this past weekend.  The Sun Devil’s will be looking to improve their score this weekend at the PAC-12 Invitational.

This weekend: ASU, Cal, Stanford @ Washington (Pac-12 Invitational) Friday, Feb 4 at 10pm

How to watch: TBD

3. Washington (-)

Another week off for Washington held them in the third spot in the GymACT standings. Washington will look to challenge their rival, ASU when the Huskies host the Pac-12 Invitational this Friday night in Seattle.

This weekend: ASU, Cal, Stanford @ Washington (Pac-12 Invitational) Friday, Feb 4 at 10pm

How to watch: TBD

4. Minnesota (-)

In their first home meet since hosting last year’s NCAA Championships, Minnesota came up shy of the visiting Hawkeyes.  With Iowa and Arizona State distancing themselves from the rest of the pack, taking down Washington seems to be a realistic goal for the Golden Gophers.

5. Temple (-)

Temple remains in the number five spot after scoring a 356.40.  The Owls next opportunity to advance in the rankings will be on February 19th against NY Alliance.

6. UIC (+1)

A much improved showing (334.6) at the Tri-meet hosted by the New York Alliance resulted in UIC moving up a spot in the standings this week. UIC will face NIU this coming weekend and will look to continue their momentum.

This weekend: Northern Illinois @ UIC Saturday, Feb 5 at TBD

How to watch: TBD

7. SC United (-1)

SC United dropped one spot in the rankings after a solid performance from UIC.  They will not see action again until February 26th.

8. Northern Illinois (-)

We have not seen any action from Northern Illinois since January 15th, however, that will change this weekend as they face off against UIC.

This weekend: Northern Illinois @ UIC Saturday, Feb 5 at TBD

How to watch: TBD

9. NY Alliance (+3)

The NYA moved up three spots in the power rankings this week to ninth after hosting a Tri-meet with UIC and Temple. NYA will have two weekends off before facing off against Temple again on Saturday, February 19th.

10. KC United (-)

KC United had a solid debut in their first meet of the year.  They look to have four solid competitors and are just one high bar score away from filling out full lineups.

11. Georgia United (-)

Georgia United will not see any action until February 26th at the Sun Devil Classic.

12. Rocky Mountain (-3)

Rocky Mountain did not make the trip out to Emerald City Classic this past weekend and won’t see action again until February 26th.
