Week 10 Power Rankings & Schedule

Each week we’ll be releasing a “Power Rankings” that aims to provide a fluid picture of how each team across the NCAA is doing on a week-to-week basis and where we see them heading. The (+) or (-) next to each team relates to how far they rose or fell from the week before. 

This year’s Power Rankings are developed utilizing the NCAA coaches’ poll as well as input from major gymnastics publications including, Inside Gymnastics, Gymnastics Now, and Neutral Deductions.

Week 10 was one consisting of rivalry meet upsets - the most notable of which was Ohio State’s (412.15) victory over Michigan (407.4). Fred Richard had a great day putting up an (84.35) to win the all-around. Richard also took the high bar (13.8) crown even with a major mistake. Ohio States Kameron Nelson led the charge for the Buckeyes, winning titles on floor (14.8) and vault (15.05). Ohio State’s Kristian Grahovski showed a strong pommel horse (14.45) routine to win that event.

Another Big Ten rivalry upset was Nebraska’s (416.55) victory over Illinois (406.05) in Lincoln.  The Husker’s Sam Phillips (80.65) won the all-around over Illinois’ Garrett Schooley (80.1). Brandon Dang showed out on pommel horse to bring in the highest score of the meet (15.15) and claim the event title. The Husker’s Chris Hiser (14.2) won the rings title over reigning NCAA rings champion Ashton Anaya (14.1).

An ECAC tri-meet had an exciting ending as Army (393.4) narrowly defeated Springfield (393.35) by half a tenth in West Point. William & Mary was not far behind as the Tribe put up their highest total of the season (387.25). The Pride’s Sam Kaplan won the all-around (76.55) and parallel bars (13.45) to lead his team. The Tribe’s Garrett Kasiski, Niko Greenly, and Sam Lee claimed titles on floor (14.3), rings (13.25), and vault (14.55) respectively. Army’s Maddox Pabellon easy won out on pommel horse (13.85) winning Army’s only individual title of the afternoon.

In what was clearly a big rivalry weekend, Division III rivals, Simpson (362.8) and Greenville (394.45) took to the mat resulting in win for the Panthers. On the individual side, Simpson athletes won the all-around and rings. Michelangelo Villani was the top all-arounder (71.35) and Brian Rollison showed his strength (13.05) to win on rings. A smattering of Greenville athletes claimed the remaining titles. Logan Watterson continued his dominance streak on vault (14.5).

In other dual meet action, Oklahoma (415.3) took down Navy (392.85) in Norman on senior night. Ignacio Yockers showed that he is more than only a pommel horse guy as he took both the pommel horse (15.05) and parallel bars (13.9) titles. For Navy, Vishal Mandava and Matthew Petros had top three finishes on parallel bars (13.55) and high bar (13.65) respectively.

Wrapping up the dual meet roundup for week 10 Stanford traveled to Colorado Springs, CO to take on Air Force. The Cardinal posted a season high score (416.35) to take down their hosts (396.45). Garrett Braunton led the way for the Falcons winning the all-around (77.35). Stanford won each of the individual event titles in which Khoi Young scooped up two, one on vault (15.1) and the other on parallel bars (14.05).
