Week 4 Power Rankings & Schedule

This week marked the end of high-profile invitational competitions and rang in the beginning of Big Ten dual meet action starting next weekend. The biggest story of the week was certainly the take down of Oklahoma by the Fighting Illini. After a breakout performance the previous week, the Sooners, without the aid of Fuzzy Benas, succumbed to the relentless Illinois squad in the final rotation.

Illinois (407.20) defeated Oklahoma (406.65) in Champaign with a huge high bar rotation to close out the competition. Sebastian Ingersoll and Will Hauke had big performances to lead the Illini to a victory. Ingersoll’s high bar (13.9) led the way for the Illini in the final rotation, while Hauke took home the parallel bars title (14.1). Oklahoma’s Emre Dodanli continued to impress as he claimed event titles on each of the three pieces he competed on over the weekend – floor (14.5), vault (14.75), high bar (14.1).

In the Bay, Cal (396.3) had a big showing, but it wasn’t enough to take down the behemoth Cardinal (415.25). Khoi Young has spent the early part of the season proving that his three world medals won last fall were not a mistake. He claimed three event titles: pommel horse (14.8), vault (14.85), and parallel bars (14.9). Cal’s Darren Wong claimed the high bar title (13.55) as he makes his way back into the Bear’s lineups after a couple of years out due to injury.

The Midshipmen took welcomed William & Mary to Annapolis, only to hand the Tribe a defeat (396.6) to (370.9). William & Mary is a talented team plagued with consistency challenges this year, which made taking on the ever-consistent Naval Academy team a big undertaking. Isaiah Drake shined yet again as he claimed event titles on floor (13.75) and vault (14.3). Navy’s Matthew Petros also had a standout day as he won titles on parallel bars (14.05) and high bar (13.45). William & Mary’s Sam Lee led the charge for the Tribe as he finished second on vault (14.2) and parallel bars (13.6).

Also in action this weekend for the ECAC were Springfield and Army. The Pride traveled to West Point and the Knights defended their home, taking down Springfield (382.3) to (367.2). Army’s Steve Manolakis had a solid showing as he took home the vault title (14.5) to win ECAC gymnast of the week.
