Week 2 Power Rankings & Schedule

Each week we’ll be releasing a “Power Rankings” that aims to provide a fluid picture of how each team across the NCAA is doing on a week-to-week basis and where we see them heading. The (+) or (-) next to each team relates to how far they rose or fell from the week before.

This year’s Power Rankings are developed utilizing the NCAA coaches’ poll as well as input from major gymnastics publications including, Inside Gymnastics, Gymnastics Now, and Neutral Deductions.

Week two of the 2024 season was busy, characterized by large perennial competitions with the West Point Open and Windy City Invitational both taking place in addition to three head-to-head match ups.

At the West Point Open, Penn State (401.3) came away with the title yet again, followed by Navy (394.5), Army (388.65), Springfield (381.85), and William & Mary (359.35). Some notable performances from this competition came from the All-Around champion, Michael Artlip (81.4) of Penn State and Springfield College Freshman Peyton Cramer, who won pommel horse with a (13.9) after scoring a monstrous (14.7) in the prelims.

The Windy City Invitational was also an exciting competition in which Michigan (405.15) snuck past Illinois (404.45) to win the team title. Simpson College (361.25) stayed strong to place third. Illinois captain, Tate Costa (79.7) took home the all-around crown. And another notable showdown took place at the Navy Pier as reigning NCAA Champion, Illinois’ Ashton Anaya (14.35) placed second to Michigan’s Javier Alfonso (15.1) on rings.

Stanford (413.8) handily defeated their host Cal (388.2), led by a pair of Cardinal all-arounders, Asher Hong (84.85) and Taylor Burkhart (83.25). Stanford’s Khoi Young, the world silver medalist on pommel horse posted a (14.85) on his signature event to take the title there. Adding to his all-around crown, Hong took home titles on three individual events - floor (14.4), rings (14.6), and parallel bars (14.45). Cal’s Chris Scales led his team with a (13.15) on pommel horse and a (13.6) on rings.

In Norman, the Air Force Falcons (382.75) fell to the Sooners (413.6). Erich Upton (79.3) won the all-around and led the Falcons. Oklahoma’s Emre Dodanli, a Turkish world team member was the star of the day. He won three event titles, floor (14.7), vault (14.7), and high bar (14.05).

The dual meet between Greenville and Ohio State was another exciting competition as Greenville managed to score a school record (387.35) in a loss to the Buckeyes (395.0) in Columbus. The Panther’s Logan Watterson is shaping up to be a contender on vault (14.65) this year as he claimed his second consecutive title on that event. Ohio State’s Caden Spencer had a big day as he collected two event titles, winning both parallel bars (14.25) and high bar (14.35).
